Receptive Language vs. Expressive Language..

Understanding the difference between receptive language skills and expressive language skills:

*Receptive Language is listening comprehension, gaining information, following directions, and being able to understand what is being said and done around you.
VS.
*Expressive Language is being able to communicate effectively. Being able to use the correct words when you speak.  You should be being able to put words in the correct sentence structure, create meaning when you speak (i.e. Adding the correct ending to your words -ing, -es, etc) or use the correct grammar when speaking.

~Expressive language is also non-verbal. In social situations you need to demonstrate topic maintenance and have good turn taking skills.

Something to think about! Most five year olds have sentence length of 4-5 words, use past tense correctly, have a vocabulary of nearly 1,500 words...
Is your child able to do this and headed in the right directions?
