"Sounds" Good to Me! A Speech Sound Development Chart and Finding Help through ChildFind.

What sounds are normal at what age? Here is a chart that tells you when a child normally develops certain sounds. If a three year old child is unintelligible to you and strangers have a difficult time understanding what he/she is trying to say, then it is important to seek for help! You should reach out to your school district and to a speech-language pathologist for a complete screening and complete evaluation if needed.

Spartanburg District 2 has monthly Child Find Screenings that reach families with children who may need special services. If there appears to be a delay in any area of your child's development, you should seek assistance through Child Find starting at the age of three. All screenings and evaluations are free of charge.

Recognizing Language Disorders: It's important!

Many of our teachers and parents recognize articulation disorders especially for those students who are unintelligible, but recognizing language disorders are just as important for academic success in reading and writing. Signs of language disorders include:

· Slow development of vocabulary, basic concepts and age appropriate grammar
· Difficulty using different conversation styles for different situations and difficulty using appropriate language
· Difficulty understanding or expressing ideas
· Delayed social development
· Late talker
· Performing below classroom expectations
· Difficulty following multi-step directions

Beginning of the Year Letter 2014-2015

Dear Parents,

What a WONDERFUL summer! The kids look so excited and the staff at CS-F Elementary are so excited too this year.

I am going on my 18th year as a speech-language therapist in the Spartanburg school system. I have a child of my own at the BSHS 9th grade campus and I know the dedication of parents in helping your child be successful in school.  It is up to us teachers, however, to give your child a good school experience. I look forward in doing just that!

My contact information is below. Please do not hesitate to stop by the portable (under the awning) in the back of the school anytime. Communication is very important! I will be posting some Handy Handouts about topics on Speech-Language Development and try my best to keep you in the know about current events. No one can influence your child's life in the way that you can! Show an enthusiasm for Cooley Springs-Fingerville Elementary School and your child’s teacher!!
